What is an e-Request for Tender?

An e-Request for Tender is commonly used to run a formal procurement tender in the public sphere, but can be used in the private sector too.

Industry example: You work in public sector hospital procurement and you’re looking for a new supply of beds. In the interests of impartiality and value for public money, you’re obliged to cast your net as wide as possible.

Publishing an e-Request for Tender is issuing an open invitation rather than one targeting a chosen pool of suppliers. Suppliers often learn of public sector goods and services requirements by consulting online records of opportunities.

By opening up competition within the marketplace, a buyer is seeking the best price and crucially making sure the procurement process is open, fair and free from bias.

All quotes are received in the same format, allowing the buyer to easily compare them. Often, the background and standing of the supplier itself will be assessed alongside the details of the quote.

An e-Request for Tender will usually follow an e-Request for Information, meaning that the buyer will have an awareness of interested supplier parties in advance, and will be fully prepared to negotiate a contract with the successful party once the tender process has come to an end.
